The Forgotten Village
Directed by Herbert Kline and Alexander Hackenschmied, featuring Burgess Meredith as narrator (Mexico„o1944). Set in the small village of Santiago, this film examines the struggle between traditional superstitions and the advances of modernization. A young peasant seeks medical help for his younger brother suffering from colitis. Under the influence of the local wise woman (curandera) the villagers resist the brother¡¦s effort, being led to believe that the only proper cure is one of chants and lotions. The cast is composed entirely of Santiago villagers. A ¡§semi-documentary¡¨ based the a story by John Steinbeck. Music by Hanns Eisler. (67 min.)
