8th Annual Winter Festival of Stories
For the first time, the Winter Festival of Stories features just two storytellers, showcasing their outstanding talents through the weekend. Opalanga promises all kinds of stories from her huge repertoire, including a program for kids on Saturday morning and her in-character telling of the life of Central City’s “Aunt Clara Brown” on Saturday afternoon. Sara Ransom presents “Rachel Carson: A Sense of Wonder” on Saturday morning for kids and families, and “Victoria Woodhull for President (first woman to run for president back in 1872) on Saturday afternoon for seniors and families – both in-character and in costume. The Saturday evening performances by both artists feature stories for adults and begin at 7 p.m. Sunday afternoon programs, including Ransom’s telling of the ancient tale “Gilgamesh,” and Opalanga’s special community-building program, begin at 1 p.m.
Opalanga’s stories bridge youth and age, tradition and technology. A Denver native, she is the “project weaver” of Denver’s Kwanzaa celebration, and a two time recipient of the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. She was recently honored by NBC television in national spots that salute her work as an African American “living legend.”
Sara Ransom, a world renowned storyteller and the daughter and granddaughter of performing storytellers, has been featured in festivals from New England to New Zealand. She received a NEA Solo Performance Fellowship in 1991 and is, to quote Sidney Brien of the Boston Institute of the Arts, “a compelling presence, representing the art of storytelling at its best.”
