Location: Boulder Public LibraryPassion Scars: Talk and digital show by Peter Steele
Peter Steele presents a talk and digital show with photographs from his “Passion Scars” series, a documentary of the carvings in aspen trees from Steamboat Springs to Telluride. Steele has identified four groups of people who carve in the aspens: the Mexican sheepherders, elk hunters, casual car campers and homesteaders. His oldest carving is dated 1922 and was taken in an old growth aspen grove outside Telluride. While hiking hundreds of miles of trails throughout Colorado, Steele – who does not himself condone aspen graffito and does not carve in trees – has documented these scarred messages expressed on the smooth, canvas-like bark in a collection that includes over 1000 “tattooed aspen.”
Steele’s other photographs have appeared in various publications and have been shown in galleries for over ten years. Most recently he has been working with architects and photographing architecture with his 1954 Linhof Technika 4x5 architect specific camera. He has also begun shooting digital photography with a Nikon D200 for event and sports photography, and has developed his fine art photography to be displayed as transparencies to hang in windows.
