Location: Boulder TheaterThe Onion presents MACEO PARKER w/ guests
While James Brown is generally credited with redefining and re-energizing R&B and soul music in the 1960s, the revolutionary vision could not have become a reality without the help of his creative collaborator, stage foil and right-hand man, saxophonist Maceo Parker. Since embarking on a solo career in the early 1990s, Maceo has been building a new funk empire, grounded in creating fresh and stylistically diverse music for fans new and old alike. He navigates his new sound deftly between James Brown's 1960's soul and George Clinton's 1970's freaky funk, while simultaneously exploring mellower jazz and the grooves of hip-hop.
Maceo has performed and recorded with international artists, including Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. His strong belief in the power of music compounded by his virtuosity allow him to play with basically anyone, and has transformed his timeless sound and “explosive live performance” to please audiences around the world.
It is almost impossible to separate which came first, Maceo or the funk. The ‘amazing P-funk Parker’ has been at it with his legendary alto horn since the 1960’s. That’s when Maceo and his drummer brother Melvin climbed on board the James Brown funky soul funk train. It wasn’t long before James coined the solo summoning signature, “ Maceo, I want you to Blow!” To most musicologists it’s the musically fertile group of men from this period of James Brown's band who are recognized as the early pioneers of the modern funk and hip-hop we still jump to today. Attendees will not only get a glimpse into the glory of funk’s creation, but also a vital lesson in the shape of funk to come.
