Pearl Street Stampedes Are Back and Ready to Welcome the Pac 12 to Downtown Boulder.  Local community, students, alumni and visitors excited for the seventh year of the Pearl Street Stampedes  - showing support for CU Athletics

Boulder, Colo. [September 5, 2011]: The Pearl Street Stampedes have become THE kickoff celebration for CU home football games for the past seven years.  Fridays before each home game, hundreds of Buffs fans line the Pearl Street Mall as the Golden Buffalo Marching Band plays to the crowds’ delight.  Members of the CU football team and coaching staff are greeted with cheers and high fives from fans of all ages.   The Stampede was the brainchild of CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn and is a joint collaboration between the University of Colorado, local businesses and Downtown Boulder.

Led by Stephen Tebo’s vintage 1948 fire truck, members of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band start performing at 7 p.m. on the 1300 block of Pearl Street (in front of the County Courthouse).  The Stampede moves west, stopping on the 1200 block and 1100 block for the band to perform.   The Stampedes’ finales take place in the Karlin building parking lot (1048 Pearl St.).   Following the Stampedes, members of the band perform for guests in each of the sponsoring businesses’ locations.

For the first time ever, CU’s annual Homecoming Parade and pep rally will take place downtown as an extended version of the October 21 Stampede.   The theme of this year’s homecoming (vs Oregon) is CU Through the Decades.    In addition to the band, coaches and players, the October 21 event will feature homecoming floats and an extended pep rally.

“The Stampedes are one of the most popular events that happen downtown,” said Sean Maher, executive director of the Downtown Boulder.  “This year, there is definitely added excitement in the air as we debut in the Pac 12.  We can’t wait to welcome not only Buffs fans, but opposing teams from across the country to our incredible downtown district.”  Maher hopes the community will come out in full force to show their black and gold pride and give the team and coaches an added boost of confidence prior to each game.
