Tulip Fairy Visits the Pearl Street Mall for Annual Festival

Category: Press Room

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Downtown Boulder welcomes the arrival of spring and celebrates the 10,000 tulips adorning the mall with the Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival

[Boulder, CO]  April 10, 2013 –   On Saturday, April 27, the Tulip Fairy (with help from pint-sized tulip fairies and elves) will be on the Pearl Street Mall for an afternoon of springtime celebrations in honor of the tulips that (with a little TLC from Mother Nature) will be in full bloom along the pedestrian mall.

Because of the growing number of attendees, this year’s event will be an entire festival (rather than a parade as in years’ past).  Participants will enjoy live entertainment on the main stage on the 1300 block of Pearl Street:

3pm –  Mary Sue & Cari

4pm – Jeff Kagan & Paige Doughty
(‘Waking the Bear’ – Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks)

5pm – Boulder School of Rock

Local community groups will also have festival booths where children can enjoy face-painting (minimal charge), coloring, art projects and other children's activities - including a caricature artist (tips appreciated) and photo ops with the Tulip Fairy herself.

In the late 70s, Boulder’s then sister city, Meppel, Holland would send 5,000 tulip bulbs annually to be planted along the Pearl Street Mall.  A form of this tradition continues to this day when every fall the City of Boulder’s Parks Department plants 15,000 brand new tulip bulbs that are directly imported from Holland.   With a little TLC over the winter months, the tulips start to peek out of the ground sometime between late March and April.  Because of the unseasonably colder temperatures this year, the tulips are expected to be at their finest the last few weeks of April.  (Please note that due to irrigation replacement on the 1100 block, the tulips will be found this year only on the 1200, 1300 & 1400 blocks.)

The Tulip Fairy & Elf Festival is free and costumes are encouraged. The public can learn more at  http://www.TulipFairyFestival.com or by calling 303-449-3774.  (Every Saturday and Sunday, City of Boulder parking garages are free.  The public is encouraged to park in the garage at 15th and Pearl streets.)

The Tulip Fairy and Elf Festival is supported by the Daily Camera & City of Boulder Parking Services and produced by Downtown Boulder, Inc.
