I love to learn. Call me a nerd if you must but it’s true. That being said, one topic I love to learn about is the environment- hence why I’m minoring in sustainability studies at the University of Denver. On my life long journey for knowledge I should add that I love adventure and would even classify myself as a bit of an adrenaline junkie: skydiving, whitewater rafting and hot air balloon rides are just a few of the activities I’ve done to keep my inner adrenaline junky satisfied. This weekend, I’m combining my thirst for knowledge with my love for adventure at Boulder’s own Adventure Film Festival.
The Festival and Street Fair happens today and tomorrow (Sept. 30t & Oct.1) where films (with the purchase of a day or weekend pass) will be shown at the Boulder Theater. Like most individuals attending the Festival, you’ll be able to find me in my five panel hat, flannel, and snacking on a Clif Bar while watching action packed, inspirational films such as “The End Of Snow,” “Eclipse,” and “Fledglings.” While I’m beyond excited to be able to fill my brain with new knowledge about our environment and learn of heroic tales and adventurous feats, I won’t deny that I can’t wait to fill my belly up with delish BBQ from The Ghost at the craft beer and food pairing event which is part of the street fair.
Below is my game plan for this weekend and what films I believe are the pick of the crop.
If you’re looking for a new hobby or just want to be inspired then I’d recommend the premiere of “Fledgings” which is about professional climbers Cedar Wright and Matt Segal as they attempt to not only climb, but paraglide off of Orizaba- 18,491 foot peak in Mexico. Fun fact” did you know Matt Segal is also an ambassador at Zeal Optics?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I loooove adventure. I love the outdoors. I love Colorado. I also love trying new things and with the screening of “Breathe”-which is about Boulder-based filmmaker and photographer Aly Niklas climbing in Indian Creek, Utah- I hope to become inspired to finally try climbing.
To cap off my viewing of adventure packed films on Friday I can’t wait to watch “Eclipse” which is all about the traveling to the Arctic Circle on the hunt for the perfect photo: a skier in front of a total eclipse.
While “The End Of Snow” could easily pass as a title for a scary story, it’s the film I’m most looking forward to seeing as it encompasses my love for nature as well as my fascination with how humans must learn to adapt to our ever changing planet. A Coloradan and tropical ecologist, Dr. Jane Zelikova tries to answer the question of “What will the world be once winter is changed forever?”
“The Living Forest,” as well as “The Trail of Kazbegi” will top off my Saturday films with new insights of world travel, climate change and heroic journeys.
While this will be my first Adventure Film Festival, I can’t wait to have a packed weekend full of inspirational tales, live music, and delicious BBQ that’s paired with a cold craft beer.
