Honestly, one of my favorite parts about this internship is knowing the in's-and-out's of events downtown! Between Fall Fest and Taste of Pearl, there's always a buzz in the air and lots happening in the city. Well, ladies and gents, guess what?! Another wonderful "shindig" is on the horizon! That's right Boulder Arts Week is almost here! For those of you who don't know, Boulder Arts Week is Boulder's only large scale celebration of culture as well as visual and performing arts. Back for their second year, the event happens from March 27th to April 4th, and highlights a variety of art forms, from documentaries to art walks to workshops.
Here are some of the events happening downtown (or super close to it) that I'm most looking forward to:
- 422 Ballet: As a dancer of 15 years, this event sounds AMAZING! This documentary is about a 25-year old New York Ballet choreographer named Justin Peck and his journey to create the company's 422nd original piece while simultaneously fulfilling his role as a Corps de Ballet member. It documents his trials and tribulations, his successes and fails, and his endurance and skill. The documentary is being displayed at the Dairy Center at a variety of dates and times. Whether your a dance fanatic or not, his incredible story is not one to miss.
- I've Never Seen That Before!: This event is designed to showcase dozens of "under the radar" photographers! Over 30 photographers were asked to display work that they felt was new, unusual, unique, mysterious, interesting, personal, experimental, different, and/or astounding. There are so many talented artists in Boulder, but I love checking out all the artists lesser known ones in the area! Make sure to stop by the Boulder Public Library and check out these talented photographers!
- Hats Off to MoP: For all the fun-lovers out there, this is the event for you! On March 28th, Goorin Bros is celebrating Month of Photography with live music and the wondrous photo booth creation by Lewis Neeff of OzBox.OzBox is a retro, state of the art photobooth that was designed photographer Lewis Neff. Typically on display at night events at the Boulder Contemporary Art Museum, OzBox is traveling just down the block to Goorin-Bros for a fun event involving pictures, crazy hats, and good times!
- Student Banners: Each spring, Downtown Boulder displays over 50 pieces artwork as light pole banners hanging on the Pearl Street Mall, designed and created by students in local elementary schools! The theme of this years' projects were "Local Foods and Farmers" so these students designed banners of produce, farmers, livestock, and more! During Boulder Arts Week, the entire community is invited to take part in voting for the People's Choice Award, in which the winner will win $100 on a Boulder GiftCard. The banners are currently on display and will continue to be displayed through April. Click here to learn more!
With the eighth largest concentration of artists in the country, Boulder Arts Week is event that you shouldn't miss. As spring is upon us, I challenge you to attend at least one of these amazing events and get your culture on. On top of these events and more, our events calendar is always bursting with fun things to do Downtown Boulder!
