IRONMAN Boulder: An Athlete's Guide to Downtown

When you grow up, you learn that superheroes are not real. You learn that there's no one out there with superhuman speed or strength. It’s really a huge letdown. I however, recently learned that this is not true. Superheroes certainly do exist and they’re coming to Boulder! More specifically Ironmen, or Ironwomen, do in fact exist and are heading our way this weekend. IRONMAN races take place all over the world, and attract the strongest competitors from all walks of life. IRONMAN Boulder  will be taking place this Sunday, August 2, 2015. The triathlon will consist of a 2.4-mile swim in the Boulder reservoir, a 112 mile multi-loop bike course, and a two-loop running course. The finish line will be in the heart of Downtown Boulder, Pearl Street, allowing every competitor a victorious finish! Boulder is a great city to show off the near superhuman abilities required to compete in this triathlon, and we are incredibly excited to be hosting all of the Ironmen and Ironwomen. So for all you IRONMAN competitors visiting Boulder this weekend, check out this guide of special deals and recommendations for athletes!

IRONMAN Boulder Special Deals:

Many Downtown Boulder restaurants and retailers are offering special deals for IRONMAN competitors. Show your bib or wristband at any of these participating businesses and get a special deal! See page for details.

Tips for Athletes:

Carbo-loading is a tradition for racers of all types, and is scientifically proven to benefit an athlete’s endurance. Of course, you have to carbo-load right, so make sure to limit your fiber and processed foods. For any of you athletes trying to get your fill on carbs, specifically pasta, I would definitely check out Pasta Jay's, The Mediterranean, or Sforno Trattoria Romana. They all have Italian food in great quantity and quality. I personally love The Mediterranean's spaghetti alle vongole, or spaghetti with clams. Pasta Jay’s has family-sized portions and is extremely child-friendly, so bring the kids!  Sforno Trattoria Romana makes a mean garlic-infused olive oil dip, and the Spaghetti Polpette is perfect for carbo-loading!

It is also highly recommended for Athletes to perform yoga inversions the week before a race. Luckily, Boulder is pretty much the epicenter of the yoga movement so you have a broad range of businesses to choose from. However, our very own Downtown is home to ONE Boulder Fitness. ONE Boulder Fitness is conveniently located for visiting athletes, and offers a sports recovery yoga class. The sports recovery class is designed to heal and relax muscles that are strained due to physical activity, so it’s perfect for after a race! A class will be held Monday, August 3rd at 4:30 pm. You can sign up here!

For those of you not looking to carbo-load, but rather get some good, easy-to-digest meals, you should try out a smoothie from LYFE Kitchen or Wonder Press. You’ll be sure to save up energy from digestion, and get a tasty meal all at the same time! LYFE Kitchen serves locally sourced and organic food whenever possible, and it is really quite tasty! I love the Kale Banana smoothie. Wonder Press is new to Downtown and the Verde juice is perfect for any athlete looking for a great, quick meal.

Athletes should search for tight spots in their body prior to a race. It is also advisable to eliminate stress. This gives you the perfect excuse to check out one of Downtown Boulder’s many spas for a relaxing massage. The Dragontree Spa is offering IRONMAN participants a free Herbal Pain Relief Footbath with any 60 or 90 minute massage. They recommend the Muscle Melt Massage for athletes. The St Julien Hotel and Spa offers incredible massages, and an experience that truly does make you feel like you are sitting in the lap of luxury.

Any competitors who are already in Boulder, and are continuing their training should try running the Gregory Canyon Trailhead. It’s scenic and well shaded! If you’re looking to get a little more water experience, try going for a swim in the Boulder Reservoir. It will be great practice, and is perfect for cooling off during the summer time!

Don't forget to check out this week's special Bands On The Bricks Welcome Concert, co-hosted by IRONMAN Boulder and Downtown Boulder! The Samples will be playing, and their mix of reggae, pop and blue grass music will have you dancing so hard it might as well be a workout.

If you're looking for some helpful IRONMAN tips, stop by the meet and greet with last year's IRONMAN Boulder winner, Justin Daerr. Justin's IRONMAN knowledge and experience will be beneficial to any athlete! The meet and greet will take place at West Flanders Brewing Company, the day before the race, on Friday, July 31st  from 4 pm - 6 pm.

So Ironmen, Ironwomen, and superheroes alike, enjoy your time here in Boulder, and keep amazing us with your awesome powers.

Happy racing!

- Jessica
