Summer Saturday with Let's Roam

Let’s Roam is an app-led scavenger hunt adventure that helps people to engage with their town or the places they visit. They use an interactive app to help people explore and connect with the world in a new way and try to have some fun while they’re at it. After Dan Weimer graduated from CU, he spent a couple of years traveling and wanted to find a way to marry the skills he learned in school with his passion for exploration and discovery; Let’s Roam was the perfect project.

The perfect Saturday downtown begins with the Farmers Market. I always try to make it in time to get a croissant from Shamane’s Bake Shoppe. After the Farmers Market clears out 13th is pretty quiet and there’s peace to be found in the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. It’s a beautiful building. It was built in 1906 and was once home to a warehouse. These days they shift around the walls inside to fit exhibits of artists from around the world as well as locals. I got the opportunity to volunteer there when I was in college, it was really cool to see the space transformed for events like their annual NYE party.

I like to wander around the Pearl Street Mall and see the street performers. On a warm sunny day in Boulder, I like to stop by Mustard’s Last Stand, grab a picnic blanket and a Chicago dog before heading down to the creek to dip my feet in and enjoy lunch. Once the sun gets to me, I’ll wander back up to Pearl Street and swing by Lolita’s for a cool drink. It seems like every time I’m in there I find something new, and it’s one of Boulder’s only 24/7 spots.

Downtown is full of great food, but one of my all time favorites is Foolish Craig's. Locally owned, great art on the walls, and the best crepes in town make this an easy choice. They even taught me a little French when the server’s got tired of hearing me mispronounce their “Duxelles” crepe. A more casual option is Illegal Pete’s. After a night at the Boulder Theater nothing quite hits the spot like a $5 breakfast burrito.

If I have friends or family in town I’ll hop on a scavenger hunt to show off Pearl St. and the CU campus. Wandering around on one of Let’s Roam’s hunts is a great way to get to know the city better for locals and transplants alike.

My favorite way to end the day is at the West End Tavern. I’ve been a member of their Whiskey Club for years and whether I’m drinking it on the patio to cool off, or at the bar downstairs to warm up, you can’t find a better whiskey bar in Boulder.

Boulder in the summer is hard to beat, and there’s always a lot to do. Whether it’s listening to vinyl with a cocktail in Salt’s basement, or swinging by the Boulder Book Store for something to read in the sun, it’s hard to go wrong with Boulder in the summer.
