Architects at Home

Saturday & Sunday, April 26-27, 11 am - 5 pm

Unexpected shapes, unusual materials, surprising splashes of color – it’s the little things that make a house an architect’s home. You can see how six people who trade in the currency of high style and design have created unique dwellings for themselves and their families, April 26 and 27, during Historic Boulder’s 2008 Landmarks of the Future Tour: Architects at Home.

Historic Boulder celebrates the 20th anniversary of its annual rite of spring, by allowing visitors to take a peek at contemporary homes that have been gracefully woven into the landscape of established west side neighborhoods in central and north Boulder. Some are new from the ground up; others are remodels. Each demonstrates the designer’s singular approach to solving the challenges of contemporary residential living and suggest that the definition of a landmark has nothing to do with age since all of the homes were completed in the last 10 years.

The homes include:

·        A Glide-style modern modular, where chunky cantilevered door awnings invite visitors into chic living spaces defined by warm colors and sleek metal and wood finishes, and polished concrete floors.

·         A re-imagined cottage made contemporary with a curved skirt of living space featuring huge windows that blur the boundary between indoors and the wooded garden outside.

·        A mid-century Mapleton Hill gem, where the interior has been artfully retooled for modern family life.

·        A contemporary home that mimics the curve of the hills behind it and invites the landscape in, with high angled windows that allow the trees beyond to peer in.

·        A modern bungalow that unfolds from behind an historic home and envelopes sleek spaces warmed by bold colors and silky woods.

·        A compact home at the edge of a community garden where outdoor rooms are as important as the elegant green-built home that shapes them.

All of the homes illustrate the livability and creativity of contemporary design and how it contributes to the cultural fabric of the community. The architects living in these homes embrace the enduring tradition of innovation in Boulder.  Historic Boulder is thrilled to share a first hand look at how our architectural and cultural history is being shaped in your lifetime.  Mark your calendars today to attend Historic Boulder’s 2008 Landmarks of the Future House tour on April 26 or 27 and enjoy a rare opportunity to see Architects at Home.
