Corner Clock Returns to Iconic 1200 Pearl Street Building in the Heart of Boulder

Clock unveiling ceremony to take place Tuesday, May 18 at 5pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[Boulder, CO.  May 14, 2021]   Back in the early 1900s, First National Bank sat predominantly on the corner of Broadway and Pearl Street in the heart of Boulder.  At that time, the majestic tower building was adorned with a clock to help keep all those passing by on time.

Well before 1900, street clocks became popular throughout the U.S. for prominent businesses, such as banks, wanting to increase their visual presence in downtowns, These clocks were also an important service when the average citizen could not afford a timepiece.  Back in time, 1200 Pearl Street was the location of First National Bank.  Its distinctive corner clock was a prominent feature on the building when it opened in 1918.

Fast forward 100 years, Paul Eklund and the other owners of 1200 Pearl decided to bring the corner clock back to life - a passion project that began in 2015. The group ordered a custom corner clock which is a close replica of the original.  The new clock was fabricated by Electric Time, Inc., near Boston, MA, which has been making these iconic street clocks since the 1920s.

After a few years of work and determination, the new corner clock has recently been installed and will be unveiled at a ceremony on Tuesday,  May 18 starting at 5 pm.  The Downtown Boulder Partnership is honored to host the ceremony alongside Mayor Sam Weaver.  During the event, Eklund will share history about how the project came to fruition. Then, the newly installed corner clock will be unveiled.

The public is welcome to attend the unveiling ceremony on the corner of Broadway along the Pearl Street Mall.   The Downtown Boulder Partnership strongly encourages masks to be worn in order to ensure the health and safety of attendees.
