Details

The traditional Japanese art of mending fabric is called Sashiko and it’s experiencing an enthusiastic resurgence in the era of Slow Fashion. Using a combination of patchwork and embroidery techniques, you can lengthen the life of a garment by repairing tears and holes or add a whole new personality to a pristine piece.

In this two-hour workshop, students will learn basic hand sewing techniques that can be adapted to create a wide variety of designs. Blending fashion and function, Sashiko techniques can easily be applied to hand-quilting, applique, as well as visible mending.

All materials are included in the price of the class. Students will take home Japanese Sashiko thread, a Japanese Sashiko needle, and scraps of fabric to be used on other projects. You are welcome to bring a garment that needs to be repaired or reinvented such as a jacket, shirt or pair of jeans, or just come and learn the techniques that can be put to use later.
