Michael Berne is the Founder and President of MJB Consulting (MJB), an award-winning, Berkeley, CA and New York, NY-based retail planning and real estate consultancy hired by a wide range of private, public and quasi-public/non-profit sector clients across the U.S., Canada and the U.K. to undertake market analyses, devise tenanting strategies and spearhead implementation efforts. The firm is active along the Front Range, with recent and past assignments in Cherry Creek North and on the 16th Street Mall, and also brings a particular strength in university towns, having worked, for example, in Tempe (Downtown), Berkeley (Downtown), Seattle (U District), Gainesville (SW 34th Street), Philadelphia (University City), New Haven (Downtown) and Cambridge (Central / Kendall Square), among others.
One of North America's leading experts on urban and “urbanist” retailing, Michael has been a keynote/featured speaker at annual conferences of the International Downtown Association (IDA), the National Main Street Center, the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and the Urban Land Institute (ULI). He has also lectured at Penn, City University of New York (CUNY) and UC Berkeley, and appeared in numerous high-profile publications, including the Financial Times, TheStreet and the Washington Post. He has served on IDA’s Board of Directors, including a two-year stint as Vice Chair of its Executive Committee. He has written extensively for Urban Land, and recently contributed a chapter to a forthcoming book entitled “Suburban Remix: Creating the Next Generation of Urban Places" (Island Press, 2018).
A born and bred New Yorker, Michael is a graduate of Columbia University (Columbia College) in New York City and Cambridge University (Gonville & Caius College) in the U.K. He lives in Berkeley’s Elmwood neighborhood with his wife, Vivienne.
